“A house divided against itself cannot stand” is enscribed into a marble wall at the entrance to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. This proverb was from “the Great Emancipator” Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugeral address of 1865. President Lincoln was not the source of “a house divided”. It was taken from Jesus “the Greatest Emancipator” in Matthew, Mark and Luke.

Since the war fought between the states (1861-1865), there has never been a more divided America than we have today. The nation is split along so many lines I could not name them all. One fracture was in evidence this week during George Zimmerman’s highly-publicized trial in Florida. Commentators opined how the late-Trayvon Martin’s girlfriend, Rachel Jeantel’s, testimony seemed strange to whites only because they don’t understand how blacks think. Black people knew what she meant but whites are too white to “get it” is what we are supposed to believe.

Most oppose homosexual unions, and on a variety of grounds, yet, gay weddings can now continue unabated because the U.S. Supreme Court essentially struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) this week. On the issue of marriage being exclusively between a man and a woman, we are a house divided. Despite God’s calling homosexual acts “detestable” (Leviticus 18:22) a few of our nation’s leaders have used their power to institutionalize what is, according to God’s law, an abomination.

America’s fissures are not little cracks. Pre-tribulation Rapture advocates declare that Jesus’ return is at any moment. They are wrong on this point and several others as well. The Pre-Wrath Rapture view is correct. Many signs remain before Jesus comes. What is imminent, or at any moment, is the day of disaster, the hour the house collapses with a great crash (Matthew 7:26-27).

The U.S. has taken the lead in corrupting the world. This once free people find themselves in bondage. We will be made a terrifying example before everyone’s eyes. We have ignored the warnings of Scripture. With sinful, unbelieving hearts we have turned away from the living God (Hebrews 3:12). A house divided cannot stand, yet, on the dreaded day about to come, God’s people will stand (Ephesians 6:10-13). -John Finkbeiner
